Josh Kerr Kitesurfing with Ben Wilson, Fiji Pro Namotu 2017

Ben Wilson : “A couple of days ago I took Josh Kerr out in the waves for his first time ever. It was only his 6th time kitesurfing so this is a pretty amazing feat in itself. I stayed a little further upwind of him giving a few tips and filming so he could see what he was doing with the kite. Although this footage is pretty average it shows Josh absolutely nailing the correct kite position.
The most important thing to remember if you’re new to wave riding, is to focus on keeping the kite around 45 degrees or lower with only subtle adjustments. This is the foundation on which everything else is built.
The ultimate goal is to go down the line keeping nice, consistent tension in the lines. If your lines go slack just edge back against your kite to regain tension and connection with your kite. When you’re building up too much speed, turn towards your kite while sheeting out. If you’re struggling to do this on a wave then remove the dynamic of the wave and practise in flat water until you get it dialled. I know it’s hard to resist the urge to rip turns, but these foundations are essential to nail so you can start to flow down the line. The turns will follow.”
