KSP Pro Ponta Preta 2011 - Day 5

KSP Pro Ponta Preta 2011 Update day 5

Sal Island, Cape Verde — December 6, 2011: With wind and waves lacking this morning at the 9:30 a.m. rider’s meeting, KSP organizers called a lay day.

Less than promising, the wave forecast projects no swell for the final five days of the Ponta Preta Kite Surf Pro’s 10-day holding period. Given the dismal forecast, KSP organizers and the rider’s committee made a joint decision to move the awards ceremony forward to Wednesday, December 7.

“The KSP’s aim is to run events in prime locations in the prime seasons, ideally in world class conditions,” states Sky Solbach, Vice President of the KSP World Championship Tour. “But even with a 10-day holding period and prime locations on the schedule you can not guarantee to get the conditions.”

While sufficient swell failed to materialize for the event, some swell did hit Cape Verde’s Sal Island during the holding period. However, event directors only allowed the completion of one heat, as the surf fell far below the KSP’s contestable standards.

“From the KSP’s perspective,” Solbach says, “we would rather not run a competition than run a competition in poor conditions where riders are not able to ride to their full potential and which does not reflect positively on the image of kitesurfing.”
Concluding the third leg of the KSP’s World Championship Kite Surfing Tour awards for the expression sessions held will be given away tomorrow night at Odjo d’ Agua. As the highlight of the event, the KSP will also crown the men’s and women’s 2011 Kite Surfing World Champions.
